The Ala Wai Watershed Project is a multi-purpose project being undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), and the City & County of Honolulu.
The goal of the project is to improve the quality of the Ala Wai watershed, from the crest of the Ko`olau Mountains to the nearshore waters, with a focus on reducing flood hazards and restoring aquatic ecosystem function. Specific project objectives include:
The project is currently in the Feasibility Phase of the USACE planning process, which includes the following activities: formulation of alternatives, evaluation of each alternative (including preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)), and selection of the recommended alternative. Congressional authorization will be required prior to construction of the project.
